Roman sites
Paintings by Alex Zubryn

Roman Sites is a series of paintings depicting the architecture of Rome in relation to contemporary life. The inspiration for the series comes from time spent by the artist at the British School in Rome on an Australia Council residency in 2000-2001. Living in Rome presented the opportunity to explore and appreciate this monumental urban space and to begin the journey of discovery through Rome's historical layers. This motivated Alex to split up the imagery of urban scenes. Sections of the views are sorted and stacked in the way of an archaeological dig. The exhibition includes depictions of the Pantheon, Largo Argentina, The Esposizione Universale di Roma as well as painterly descriptions of Roman brick formations gleaned from outer sites such as Ostia Antica and Hadrian's Villa. Alex Zubryn was born in Melbourne in 1965. From early years Alex showed considerable talent and enthusiasm for art and music, which was further developed during his high school. Frequent travels to Italy motivated Alex to learn Italian. In 1989, he returned to Italy, where he spent two months studying ancient architecture and art. In 2001 Alex received the Australian Arts Council Grant for studio residency at the British School in Rome, where he spent three months studying old masters, painting Roman and Italian vistas, then another four months visiting other European cities and galleries in 2002. Overall, from 1987 onwards, Alex has had a large number of well-received solo exhibitions and participated in an even greater number of group exhibitions, mostly in Australia, and some overseas A fair number of Alex’s works were purchased by galleries, art businesses and private collectors. In 2007 Alexr was commissioned to paint a large scene (3.5m x 2.4m) of a cricket match in the recently rebuilt MCG Stadium. The picture shown is a detail of the work "Largo Argentina", 2003, oil on canvas, 79 x 300cm by A.Zubryn.
